IATA Highlights Value of Aviation for Peru

The report quantifies the substantial benefits that aviation (including aviation-related tourism) generates in terms of jobs and economic activity in the country. Highlights from 2023 data show that aviation supports and facilitates:

• USD 6.2 billion of economic activity (total impact including wider supply chain, employee spending, and tourism activities), equal to 3.2% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
   
• 364,000 jobs (total impact including wider supply chain, employee spending, and tourism activities), of which 36,100 are in aviation.
   
• 240,300 tonnes of air cargo.

“Peru’s aviation sector plays a vital role in connecting communities, supporting tourism, and enabling trade. With strong domestic demand and growing cargo activity, aviation will be a key support for Peru’s economic development. Continued collaboration between industry and government will be important to ensure that Peru maximizes the economic and social benefits aviation can deliver,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

Key priorities for Peru

To continue generating benefits from aviation, IATA outlines three key priorities for the country:

• Cost effective infrastructure: As Peru expands its airport infrastructure, IATA encourages continued collaboration with airline stakeholders and alignment with global standards and best practices. Advancing infrastructure projects more rapidly will help Peru fully capture the economic benefits that air connectivity can deliver. Efficient, cost-effective infrastructure is vital to strengthening Peru’s position as a leading South American hub for trade and tourism.
   
• Competitive charges: Maintaining competitive airport charges will be important to support the growth of connecting traffic and route development. Eliminating the domestic transfer fee (TUUA) could help stimulate additional investment in fleet, routes, and connectivity, helping to expand Peru’s international network and strengthen the country’s competitiveness as a regional hub.
   
• Effective regulation: A stable and predictable regulatory environment based on global standards will help airlines respond to growing demand and expand connectivity. Ensuring that regulatory processes support route development and operational efficiency will help Peru strengthen its position within the region’s aviation network and fully realize the economic benefits aviation can deliver.
